Ubuntu is mijn favoriete linux distributie. Ik wil dan ook ubuntu op installeren op mijn iMac. Over de systeemeisen las ik dit: All NewWorld Macs should work. This means iMacs, iBooks, blue & white G3s, Lombard G3 PowerBooks and newer. The minimum system requirements are 256 MB of RAM and 3 GB of hard disk space. Users with less RAM or disk space may try Xubuntu.
Je moet om ubuntu te installeren eerst een ppc-iso bestand downloaden, vervolgens moet je deze booten op je iMac. Dat doe je door ‘c’ ingedukt te houden voordat mac os opstart. Helaas kent ubuntu’s nieuwste versie (Gutsy Gibbon, 7.10) nog een aantal bugs en gaat mijn install niet van een leien dakje. Op fora wordt vaak aangeraden het met ubuntu 7.4 te proberen. Het nadeel van ubuntu is dat het bedrijf dat het produceert geen support meer geeft voor de PowerPC. Dat is nu community-supported. Ikzelf wacht het nog even af, maar ik vind de support vanuit de community, het forum niet echt heel indrukwekkend. Ubuntu gaat het voorlopig niet worden, helaas.
